Handyman is a job that appeared in the USA not so long ago. What does it mean? Well, nothing more than already in the name – a man with hands.
Let’s talk about this profession and why it’s so popular. And I'll also mention why this job can be dangerous. So let’s begin!
The first appearance of handymen was when workers started to be more qualified while working at factories, offices, stations, railways… So the heads of the family had to leave their homes for a long time. And their wives faced such problems as burnout lump bulbs, leaking faucets and so on. It appeared that 20th century's industrialisation put this profession on the spotlight. Wife at home needed help and her husband or away, or a clerk, or his hands were all thumbs. It’s quite logical for her to call for a handyman.
The USA is a perfect place for handymen since no one works with their hands. Well, they can work but don’t want to. It’s easier to hire a “professional” – handyman. I’ll explain the difference between a professional and a handyman later. In the US it’s common for men to call a handyman for something like fixing a shelf.
Picture this: a random man called for a handyman. Simple guy comes and he is handy, smart, and smiling. After he fixed the shelf he asked for $200. The man sees that he is a sharp lad and asks him to replace the light bulbs that he himself almost destroyed. The guy took the deal, replaced light bulbs and asked for $300 over. The man asked again for replacing a switcher and the guy did it for more than $150. So this sharp lad just made $650 in two hours.
And the handyman was happy, he had $650 in two hours.
This story is real. I mean, it’s truly possible to earn that much in America and even more! There are states like New York and Tennessee where you don’t need to have a license for this job.
You think that you can do the same in California? I won’t be so sure. I personally know a lot of people who work as handymen and earn a lot on this. This is truly a great way to make money for life. And you can make a lot of them.
It’s a great way to make money until you get caught.
Contractor law says that any project bill should be not more than $500 otherwise this person should have a contractor's license. If you don’t follow it there is only one way ticket – prison. Ok, it’s a joke! First, you’ll be fined properly and forbidden to resume this job. But everybody wants to eat, right? You will continue because you don’t dare. Daredevil. By the way, a good name for those who are handymen in the Bay Area. There are a lot of immigrants who want it cheap and don’t care about quality. So, you won't have any qualified service and pay for that as Daredevil asks.
